The African Waste Tire Situation

  • Waste tires are a global concern for governments and economies
  • Developed economies often ship their waste tires to emerging markets (Australia ships 250,000 tons to Asia every year)
  • In South Africa, REDISA estimates that there are 60 million to 100 million waste tires lying in stockpiles countrywide, many of which are illegal and unsafe, or simply dumps in open fields. That is a 300,000 tonne environmental problem.
  • It is also an estimated minimum of R620 million p/a business opportunity (in South Africa).

Trident Fuels has the largest pyrolysis plant in South Africa and is equipped with the latest continuous pyrolysis technology.

  • Pyrolysis is the thermal decomposition of materials at elevated temperatures in an inert atmosphere.
  • Although Pyrolysis exists in SA – most groups operate on the fringe without economies of scale and funding to grow .
  • Other plants don’t have distillation and blending facilities for further refining outputs which we do.
  • Other plants don’t refine carbon black- we pellet and condense into coal brickets and further refine into ASTM standards for industrial use.
  • A self-cleansing design ensures there is no carbon built-up.
  • The plant is self powered requiring minimal grid based power.
  • Patented additive packages ensure unprecedented fuel blend capability.
  • The system requires minimal energy and relies on internally generated gas to heat the reactor kiln in contrast to conventional systems of heating with an electric coil or microwaves.
  • The system produces a high quality oil (CV 40Mj) for which a market exists. The variables that influence the formation of the oil are uniquely controllable that enables the plant to produce a variety of fuel oils.
  • The system produces carbon rich char of 76% for which a market exists. Trident is currently developing technology to produce a 95% tire derived carbon black.
